    DanceTheYard and Friends at Featherstone

    Join DanceTheYard and island improvisation group, What’s Written Within, for an evening of dance on the beautiful outdoor stage at Featherstone Center for the Arts. DanceTheYard will be presenting works old and new. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chair or blanket!

    "PRIDE, NOT PREJUDICE" - A Pride Celebration

    The tea dance will be an outdoor dance party open to all (young people are invited to be part of the festivities) at The Yard campus and theater in Chilmark on Saturday, August 2nd, starting at 4 PM. New York City/Fire Island drag entertainer Schwa De Vivre hosts, while New York City's DJ Sydny and Provincetown DJ Mark Louque spin throughout the evening. Scott Nelson, The Yard's resident designer, is the event producer.

    Dress: "Fire Island Festive, Vineyard Fabulous"

    Libations and Hydration: BYOB (dry town) - The Yard will provide mixers and water for purchase. A special Pride themed cocktail will be available by donation for those 21 and over (proper ID required).

    Behavior: Welcoming and inclusive, respectful of one another and especially of The Yard's neighbors. Please pay attention to Yard staff.

    $10 suggested donation at the door.

    The Yard and the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival present Camille A. Brown and Dancers at the MV Performing Arts Center with "Mr. TOL E. RAncE," Ms. Brown’s portrayal of the images of blacks in entertainment on Tuesday, August 5th at 7pm at the MV Performing Arts Center. The following week, as part of the company’s creative residency, the company will show excerpts of a new work-in-progress, "Black Girl." Drawing on Harris-Perry’s Sister Citizen, the photography of Carrie Mae Weems, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and Daniel Silberberg’s Wonderland: The Zen of Alice, "Black Girl" depicts the complexities of carving out a positive identity as a Black female in urban American culture; a talk-back with the artists and influential members of the African American community and others will follow on Saturday, August 16th at The Yard.

    Black Girl and Mr.Tol E.RAncE were created with funding from the National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The presentation of "Black Girl" is supported by the Expeditions program , made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the six New England state arts agencies. Both programs are administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

    Marvelous Marvin

    Marvelous Marvin has been blending education and entertainment for 20 years. Mixing science, magic, circus arts, great visuals and a unique rhyming text, Marvin shows keep younger kids attentive, older ones interested and parents smiling. At The Yard, Marvin will be performing, "The Magic Of Science" which demystifies the scientific process and demonstrates how artist and scientists are alike. Behold the twirling perpetuos and thrill to the billiard ball spinning sculptures.

    Arlen Roth and Lexie Roth

    Father and daughter Arlen Roth and Lexie Roth perform at The Yard. Arlen Roth, one of "The Top 100 Influential Guitarists of the Century" (Vintage Guitar Magazine) will bring his famous fingerstyling and slide guitar skills to a mash up of Blues, Country, Rockabilly, Classics, Bluegrass, Rock n' Roll and some Jazz, too! Lexie Roth will perform songs from her solo albums along with songs recorded with her father.

    DJ Rekha (Public Dancing Allowed!!!)

    South Asia NYC, comes to Up-island MV! British-born, New York City-based, DJ Rekha was called "Ambassador of Bhangra" by the New York Times. Her sophisticated dancehall turntable talent lies in a sophisticated ability to merge classic Bhangra and Bollywood sounds into electronic dance music. Her work has been featured on CNN, NPR, PBS.

    Aparna Ramaswamy

    Acclaimed Bharatanatyam soloist and choreographer Aparna Ramaswamy's choreography and performance have been described as "a marvel of buoyant agility and sculptural clarity" (Dance Magazine), "thrillingly three-dimensional," and "an enchantingly beautiful dancer," (The New York Times). Ramaswamy will perform Sannidhi (Sacred Space) with an ensemble of musicians. The piece brings together Indian-American artists of the next generation who retain roots in their collective history while bringing their own voices to the contemporary stage.

    DanceTheYard presents the artistic endeavors of Yard Managing Director, Alison Manning and Yard Director of Island Programs and Education, Jesse Keller. Debuting Friday night will be a full length work co-choreographed by Manning and Keller. Saturday's matinee will include new works by Yard interns, island-based improvisational dance company What's Written Within and other guest performers. Now in its fourth year, DanceTheYard reveals the artistry behind the names and faces you have come to know throughout the season.

    The 2014 Bessie Schönberg Residency includes New York choreographers Cori Marquis and Luke Murphy and Portland, OR based Eric Skinner (with partner Daniel Kirk). During their 3-week residency, the choreographers will work with collaborating performers and other artists under guest Yard mentor David Brick, Co-Artistic Director of Philadelphia's HEADLONG Dance Theater, to create brand new work developed while on island.

    Join us to see where all the new research and Vineyard inspiration take these emerging creators in the works-in-progress performance.

    Steeledance, a NYC modern dance company led by co-choreographers Teri and Oliver Steele, perform "Strictly Personal," showing humanity and physicality at its purest. Adam Barruch returns to The Yard following his Yard choreographic debut as a 2012 Bessie Schönberg Mentorship Residency Choreographer, during which he created the beginnings of the textured and captivating "Belladonna" This will be a Yard premiere for "Belladona" as a full-length work.

    Called "one of the most singular and searching imaginations of our time" by New York Times, Paul Taylor is one of this country's truly legendary choreographers. The touring company Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company makes many of his most beloved works available for audiences across the country and globe. This celebrated company of six will perform some of Mr. Taylor's most famous repertory from a celebrated 60 year history.

Join The Yard for this annual benefit event to match an anonymous challenge gift and support year-round programs that bring the island dance, music, theater and more! Exciting pop-up performances, including a by the magical Chinese choreographer Yin Mei and collaborators will be followed by a sit-down dinner with music by the young A cappella maestros, Vineyard Sound.

    Yin Mei Dance

    Yin Mei is an internationally renowned choreographer, performance artist and director of the NYC-based Yin Mei Dance. A Chinese artist who grew up under the Cultural Revolution, Mei trained in martial arts, folk dance and other dance forms characteristic of the China of her day. Mei merges this experience with a striking post-modern and political sensibility. Her theatrically talented company, including director Jay Scheib, will be in creative residency at The Yard, researching a piece based around the classic film, "Farewell My Concubine." Yin Mei Dance will present a performance program drawn form works old and new.
