Can I apply to more than one of the intern positions? Yes, you are more than welcome to apply to more than one of the intern positions. If you are doing so, please indicate in your cover letter which is your first choice, second choice etc., and why. Also, make sure to mark this information on your application form.

Do I have to be a dancer in order to apply for this internship? No, you do not have to be a dancer, however, The Yard structures their internship so that the interns do have dance performance opportunities throughout the summer. Regardless of whether or not you are a dancer we would love for you to apply. Anyone interested in the performing arts is eligible.
-
One of the references says it must be a dance reference. What if I am not a dancer and thus, do not have a dance reference? That is perfectly fine. If you are not a dancer, then the third reference can be from someone who knows you in any performing arts aspect whether you are an actor, musician, singer etc. If you are not a performing artist, then the third reference can be just another work or professional reference.

I am in college and interested in applying to your internship but the ending date interferes with when I start the fall semester again. Can I leave early?Unfortunately due to the nature of our internship, we cannot allow any of the interns to leave early. This does mean that most, if not all, of our interns have already graduated from school. We do try and work around everyone's schedule if there is a potential interference with a strong candidate. We have had some interns in the past who started their semester late, however, we want what is best for you and your schooling, therefore if it will not work out this year, maybe apply in the future.
-
When will I find out if I am accepted to the internship program? All applications are due by March 1st, 2012. Once all the applications have been submitted, the senior staff will review all materials and contact you via email or phone for future information about the application process. We plan to make all decisions no later than April 5th, 2012.
-
Where do I live during the internship? All interns will live in the staff house right on property. Interns will share a room with one other person. The house also contains a full kitchen, two bathrooms, an extra outdoor shower, living room, and laundry facilities.

Should I bring my car with me? We always encourage those with cars to bring them. If you do not have a car, there is a great transit system on Martha's Vineyard that is available. We do have company cars available for the weekly grocery store run, company related errands, and emergencies. The company cars, however, are not available for personal use, unless pre-approved by senior staff.
-
How many days off do we get? Will I have a lot of free time? Everyone gets Sundays off each week. Depending on the schedule, the senior staff may also grant additional time off if requested in advance. You also have most evenings free on non-performance days. More of the schedule is explained once accepted to the program.

What are some of the benefits of the internship? Besides getting to work with some great artists and arts administrators, the internship has some great perks. Located in Chilmark, Massachusettes on the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard, you will have access to some of the most gorgeous private beaches, which are only a ten minute walk away. The interns will also get to enjoy a weekly farm share of meat and fresh vegetables from local farms on Martha's Vineyard. Each intern will receive a $750 stipend and up to $150 travel reimbursement. Free dance classes are available 5 days of the week and free yoga classes 7 days of the week. There are also professional performance opportunities with visiting dance companies and at events around the island. This just touches on some of the many experiences and extras you will have as an intern at The Yard.

“The Yard experience was one of the best I had in my early years. The people I worked with there have been very influential in my career. The piece I made was my first real breakthrough in dance, so it was a really big summer for me.”
