Suzanne
Vega in Carson Talks About LoveKay
Matschullat directs a music-theater work-in-progress
Saturday, August 28, 6:30
Sunday, August 29, 6:30 Kay Matschullat directs singer-songwriter
Suzanne Vega in a new music-theater piece based on the writings
of Carson McCullers. Vega conjures the hearts that McCullers painted
in the prose of her work and acted out through her passionate life.
As she speaks and sings her way through a labyrinth of love, we
experience the comedic Carson, the pained Carson and the provocateur
she became. In trying to explain, she strives to conquer the demons
that intrude on the course of love, which for her and her characters
never runs smoothly. Seamlessly moving from spoken word to song
and back again, Vega channels McCullers in a way that reveals the
meeting of two souls through a work of art. The summer of 2010 will
bring the artists to the Weston Playhouse, Steve Stettler Artistic
Director, where they will develop the piece, which will be performed
at The YardArts! Festival and then premiere at Rattlestick Theater,
David Van Asselt Artistic Director, in New York in May 2011.
